Jeremy Garrett is New York Art Man. A licensed tattoo artist, Garrett has been tattooing professionally for almost two decades. He is a commercial artist born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. Garrett received a scholarship and graduated from one of the country’s most acclaimed institutions, The School of Visual Arts in New York City. While in college, he started tattooing underground when tattooing was illegal in NYC. After graduation, Garrett established Black Work Studio, a gritty illustration studio and gallery located in deep dark canyons of midtown Manhattan.
Although he is trained as a classical fine artist, Garrett’s style lends itself to a unique mix of urban grunge, comic book art with a touch of post-surrealistic pop and his work has continued to help define American underground art. Affluent collectors and top executives from Fortune 500 companies such as FedEx, ABC and members of the Grand Lodge of New York’s Masonic Order are only a few who enjoy his diversity as an artist. As an accomplished graphic designer, he has worked with clients such as Kodak, Ralph Loren, Johnson & Johnson, Lockheed Martin and ABC News.
Gotham City continues to be the true source of Garrett’s passion. She has encouraged his long sultry love affair with the tattooing profession and he is grateful to be one of her creative representatives. From this union he has beaten the odds and has risen to become New York City’s ink slinging super hero you know and love. When tattooing became legal in New York City in February of 1997 he officially made this medium available at Black Work Studio. Japanese GQ magazine wrote, “It’s where real New Yorkers go for tattooing”. He currently focuses his artistic attentions on helping define underground art in America and is interested in meeting others who share this common goal.
