Kalliope Amorphous
I work exclusively with the self portrait photograph as a means of exploring ideas of identity, gender, archetype and myth. Using a combination of light, costume, theatrical makeup and props, I create new identities and fuse them into still images. I am not a photographer, but a performance artist with a camera.I shoot digital, yet prefer a raw and classic aesthetic over heavily digitized post processing. All effects are created in camera.
I have a hard time identifying with my work as "self" portraiture, because all of these characters and personalities are their own. I just try to give them life for a moment, acting as a screen for these various identities, moods and personalities to play on. My ideas tend to be conceptually eclectic, ranging from interpretations of pre-existing iconography to the surreal, bizarre and spiritually symbolic. I am inspired by everything from Pre-Raphaelite art and Hindu iconography to dark comedy and psychotronic cult films.
I have spent the bulk of my youth in New York City and left my heart in San Francisco. I am currently cloistered in the smallest state in the country, pursuing opportunities for my art via exhibiting and publishing.
My heroes are saints, misfits, empaths, old folks, rabblerousers, the goddess Kali and Leigh Bowery.
