Ugh. I still do that from time to time, but this method is much more fun, spontaneous and sloppy, therefore, clearly superior. I don't remember why I decided to start painting on the old books, but I knew I wanted to paint with black ink, and a bit of poking around lead me straight to the old Sumi-e method of hand-grinding and splashing ink onto a page. It takes forever to grind out the ink, but I suppose that's the point. The ink takes to the wolf's bristle brushes old book paper like magic. The rest is easy. I've learned that Lynda Barry uses the Sumi-e method almost exclusively now, and she is much better at it than I am. She *painted* an entire book...I mean the words and everything.
