Hand-ground Chinese and Japanese ink on 100 to 375 year old book paper. the kinds of things someone with any common sense would avoid.
"I have made pen and ink drawings on pretty white paper for 25 years, using technical pens or felt tips or whatever I had lying around. thin, even lines painstakingly laid onto perfect white paper rectangles - "Hey, watch those corners, man, you'll bend them!" Ugh. I still do that from time to time, but this method is much more fun, spontaneous and sloppy, therefore, clearly superior. I don't remember why I decided to start painting on the old books, but I knew I wanted to paint with black ink, and a bit of poking around lead me straight to the old Sumi-e method of hand-grinding and splashing ink onto a page. It takes forever to grind out the ink, but I suppose that's the point. The ink takes to the wolf's bristle brushes old book paper like magic. The rest is easy. I've learned that Lynda Barry uses the Sumi-e method almost exclusively now, and she is much better at it than I am. She *painted* an entire book...I mean the words and everything. It's called "Cruddy," and you should be reading about her, not me."

"Yeah...I have no idea where
this one came from."
"There is a guy in the town where I live who actually does go around town dressed as
Charlie Chaplin. and if you run into him, he will not speak. I guess because Chaplin is
associated with silent films? I don't know, but it's fucking creepy, man."
"This very guy was right outside my house one night, kneeling in the middle of the street begging the cops to shoot him. I was wishing they would, since it was about 4 a.m. and he had been screaming for about 45 minutes, but they didn't kill him. They did taser him, after he kicked out one of the cop car windows and started in on another with his head. Just another night in San Pedro."
"Art school - help or hinderance? Discuss amongst yourselves."
"Unrequited love is a bitch. and no matter how perfect you are, or think you are, someone is always going to look at you and go, 'nah, I don't think so'."
"There is a common misconception that hippies were all groovy, peace-loving good guys, but a lot of them were little more than filthy criminals and freaks. not the good kind of freak...the other kind. Sid was into acid, free love and petty theft. he never did make it to Woodstock, but up until he died in a meth lab explosion in 1988, he told people that he had been there, and how groovy it was."
"The 370 year old paper intimidated me, so I messed this one up. to answer your next question, no, I did not tear up a bible from the 1600's. some other nut did, I'm just using some of the pages. please direct your hate mail to:
